Book Club:   The book for August is “The Coffee Trader” by David Liss.  From Amazon book review:  “Amsterdam, 1659: On the world’s first commodities exchange, fortunes are won and lost in an instant. Miguel Lienzo, a sharp-witted trader in the city’s close-knit community of Portuguese Jews, knows this only too well. Once among the city’s most envied merchants, Miguel has suddenly lost everything. Now, impoverished and humiliated, living in his younger brother’s canal-flooded basement, Miguel must find a way to restore his wealth and reputation. Miguel enters into a partnership with a seductive Dutchwoman who offers him one last chance at success—a daring plot to corner the market of an astonishing new commodity called ‘coffee.’ To succeed, Miguel must risk everything he values and face a powerful enemy who will stop at nothing to see him ruined. Miguel will learn that among Amsterdam’s ruthless businessmen, betrayal lurks everywhere, and even friends hide secret agendas. Book Club will meet Wednesday, Aug. 31, at 7:30 p.m. at the home of Julia Loy, 13 Deer Run. Roadwork is under way!

The asphalt contractor will return to finish paving a stretch of Lake Drive South near Hemlock in the coming weeks.  The prep work is completed on Laurel Lane, Hemlock, Fox Run and High Trail.  These roads will be double chip-sealed in the coming weeks as well.  The second round of culvert repairs will commence shortly.  Repairs will take place on Sunset Trail at the intersection of Ridge, and a long section of Ridge Road will see culvert replacement and paving.

Smile!  You're probably on camera!

New cameras will be installed in the coming months around the Isle. More public areas will be covered, including the tennis courts, basketball court, both marinas and all sides of the Clubhouse. In addition, cameras will photograph everyone coming and going from the Isle, and will even take a photo of every license plate.  Please be advised that when you are on Isle property, it is likely that you are being filmed.

Be mindful of the Isle rights-of-way.

The Isle's right-of-way is 20 feet from the center of Lake Drive South (40 feet across), and 15 feet from the center of all other roads (30 feet across).  Anything left in the right-of-way for an extended period of time (boat trailers, dumpsters, construction supplies, etc.)are a violation of Ordinance 3 and must be moved.

Please drive slowly and share the road!  The summer months bring more campers, pedestrians and bikers to the Isle roads, making this the most dangerous time on our roadways.  Please adhere to the 20 mph speed limit.

The next regular board meeting will be Saturday, August 20, at 10 a.m. at the room next to the CI Post Office.  If you would like to submit items for the regular monthly meeting agenda, please do so at least one week prior to the meeting.  Submissions may be made by email to: clerk@candlewoodisle.com This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. Dinner & Movie Saturday, 7 p.m.

Rebecca is a 1940 American psychological thriller-mystery film. Directed by Alfred Hitchcock, it was his first American project, and his first film produced under contract with David O. Selznick. The film's screenplay was a version by Joan Harrison and Robert E. Sherwood based on Philip MacDonald and Michael Hogan's adaptation of Daphne du Maurier's 1938 novel Rebecca. The film was produced by Selznick and stars Laurence Olivier as the brooding aristocratic widower Maxim de Winter and Joan Fontaine as the young woman who becomes his second wife, with Judith Anderson and George Sanders.

The film is shot in black and white, and is a gothic tale. We never see Maxim de Winter's first wife, Rebecca, who died before the story starts, but her reputation, and recollections about her, are a constant presence to Maxim, his new young second wife, and the housekeeper Danvers.

The film won two Academy Awards, Outstanding Production and Cinematography, out of a total 11 nominations. Olivier, Fontaine and Anderson were all Oscar nominated for their respective roles. However, since 1936 (when awards for actors in supporting roles were first introduced), Rebecca is the only film that, despite winning Best Picture, received no Academy Award for acting, directing or writing. Saturday, July 16, 7 p.m. at the Clubhouse.  Menu has changed: Curry Glazed Chicken, Lemon Herb Chicken and Quinoa Garden Salad.  Please bring dish, or dessert, and/or wine.  $10.00 per person. Please ask yourselves and your children to pick up after themselves.”  Glenn says this was from the Candlewood Eye of years past.

B

ook Club:   The book for July is “Disclaimer” by Renée Knight.   From the New York Times review:  “What self-respecting genre writer can begin a book with a murder anymore? Or with the discovery of a corpse? These standard openers have been done to death, so to speak, to the point where you’d be crazy to read a mystery or thriller that uses one. A new, improved opening gambit is an absolute must for any author who wants your attention. But even among books that begin imaginatively, Renee Knight’s ‘Disclaimer’ is something special. As it starts, we meet a documentary filmmaker named Catherine Ravenscroft who is in the midst of being violently sick. Her husband, Richard, is in bed, and Catherine has just raced to the adjoining bathroom. What has shocked her into that? She has picked up a book, ‘The Perfect Stranger,’ near the bed and read just enough of it to recognize herself as its heroine. And she sees that it’s about the terrible, life-destroying secret that she’s kept for 20 years and thought no one else could possibly know. But someone wrote this. Someone spiteful. The book’s disclaimer, about its bearing no resemblance to anyone living or dead, has been threateningly crossed out in red ink.”  Book Club will meet Tuesday, July 26, at 7.30 p.m. at the home of Aimée Suhie, 5 Willow Lane.
