News from the Candlewood Eye

CI Dragon Boat Winners

Brian Hart writes: “This past Saturday, the Candlewood Isle Strokers were successful in their pursuit of a Three-peat in the third annual Candlewood Lake Authority-sponsored Dragon Boat races. This event has grown in popularity since its inception in the summer of 2009.  CI Captain Patrick Callahan was put to the challenge of recruiting volunteers to participate for a worthy cause to raise funds for the CLA to help them combat the multiple issues facing our beautiful local resource.

“Eight boats in 2009 grew to 16 in 2010 and to 18 this year with a tremendous turnout of spectators, many of them expressing interest in recruiting teams to compete in next year's event.
What originated in 2009 as a social competitive event has escalated into a highly competitive one with some impressive teams comprised of athletic individuals eyeing to dethrone the "Mighty Strokers" and take the 2012 Dragon Boat Trophy Cup and thwart The Strokers’ attempt to achieve the elusive and difficult three-peat.

“But this group of individuals was not to be denied. With strategy, focus, perseverance, heart, teamwork, comraderie and bonding, every individual (20 strokers, a drummer and steerer) combined technique, cadence, timing and strength as one powerful unit to overcome the odds stacked against them in the finals as they got off to an extremely poor start at the gate. What an effort! Congrats to the "Mighty Strokers." (See Strokers on youtube below.)

“P.S. These 40-foot, 550-pound boats are provided by a group of people from Quebec who are very passionate about the art and technique of Dragon boat racing and were extremely helpful and fun in coaching The Strokers at the two practices prior to the big event.

“Hats off to Larry Marsicano and Mark Howarth of the Candlewood Lake Authority who were so helpful in making this event a great success that will continue to grow in popularity each and every year with more boats, more participants, more entertainment for entire families and more funds and contributions to a wonderful organization, the CLA.”
